ABOUT Maria Dates
Maria Dates earned her master’s degree from Fairfield University where she received extensive training in working with individuals, couples, and families in different treatment settings. Maria continues to support individuals, couples, and families as they navigate life’s challenges.
Maria is passionate about helping individuals struggling with eating disorders, disordered eating, and overall relationships with themselves, food, and body. Her passion led to an additional master’s research thesis that looked at developing a greater understanding of individual experiences when receiving food and body messages from parental figures. Her thesis is currently under review for publication.
To foster a safe and growth-oriented therapeutic environment, Maria makes it a priority to understand her client’s perspective and motivations underlying the challenges that they are facing. She believes that every individual possesses an inherent capacity for growth and resilience. Together Maria and her clients identify their strengths and additional resources to move beyond patterns that no longer support their growth. Through this process, clients cultivate a deeper connection with themselves and build more meaningful, satisfying relationships with others.
Maria is a first generation Argentine-American. This aspect of her identity shaped her perspective as a relational therapist. She understands how cultural dynamics shape our beliefs, values, emotions, behavior, and sense of self. This perspective informs a nuanced appreciation for the power of relationships and the ways individuals both influence and are influenced by their environments throughout different junctures of their life. She provides services in both English and Spanish.
She is grounded in Structural Family Therapy and Strategic Therapy models, however, utilizes techniques from other models including Bowenian Family Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy (EFT), Experiential Therapy, Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).
